Why a shaky ten-second video sells more pet food than a polished product photo, to Hugo Galvao de Franca Filho

Hugo Galvao de Franca Filho has noticed that some of the simplest content a pet store can produce, a short clip of a dog actually eating the food or a cat actually using the toy, tends to outperform far more expensive photography on the same product page. That is not a coincidence, and the reasoning behind it is worth taking seriously rather than treating video as an optional extra.

The conversion case is not subtle

Product pages featuring video consistently convert at close to double the rate of pages relying on static images alone, with commonly cited benchmarks putting video pages around 4.8 percent conversion against roughly 2.9 percent without. Shoppers who watch a product video also become considerably more likely to actually add that item to their cart, and consumers report trusting a brand more once they have seen a product demonstrated on video rather than just described in text.

As explained by Hugo Galvao de Franca Filho, none of these numbers describe a marginal nice-to-have. They describe one of the more direct levers available for improving how a product page performs.

Why photos alone leave a real question unanswered

A still photo can show what a product looks like. It cannot answer the question a pet owner is actually asking before they buy, which is almost never about appearance. Does the dog actually enjoy this toy, or ignore it after the first five minutes? Is this kibble size genuinely right for a small breed, or does it look deceptively large in a photo shot at the wrong angle? Does this bed hold its shape after a week of real use, or does the same soft cushioning in the product photo flatten out immediately?

These are functional, behavioral questions that a photograph, however well lit, was never designed to answer. A short video, even an unpolished one, can settle each of them in a few seconds by simply showing the product doing what it claims to do.

The best pet product videos are diagnostic, not decorative

This is the part that surprises businesses used to thinking about video as a production investment requiring a proper studio and script. The videos that actually move a purchase decision forward are not the cinematic ones. They are the ones that function like proof, showing an actual pet’s real reaction, an actual bag being poured, an actual toy being chewed on, rather than a stylized shot designed to look impressive.

A buyer scrolling past a beautifully lit but generic product video is still left wondering whether the claim holds up in practice. Hugo Galvao argues that a buyer who sees thirty seconds of a real dog genuinely interested in a toy has that doubt answered directly, which is precisely the kind of reassurance that turns hesitation into a completed purchase.

What this means for how a pet business should actually invest

None of this requires a large production budget or a dedicated content team. It requires treating a simple, honest demonstration as more valuable than a polished but generic image, and prioritizing that kind of proof specifically on the products where buyers hesitate the most, whether that is an untested brand, an unusual product design, or an item a pet’s individual preference genuinely affects.

A pet e-commerce catalog does not need every product filmed professionally to see the benefit. It needs the products carrying the most buyer uncertainty covered first, with content built to answer the specific doubt a shopper actually has rather than to look impressive in isolation. Hugo Galvao de Franca Filho states that this distinction, between decorative and diagnostic, is usually what separates a video that gets watched and ignored from one that actually closes the sale.
